Hi I need to disable one of my GTX 295's cores/GPUs, i.e. so it becomes a GTX 275 sort of. It is a dual GPU and I need to cut its power consumption so will need to disable one of the GPUs. This should cut its power consumption by half, correct?

Yes, I know it would cut performance by half. Yes, you are probably wondering why bother paying top dollar for a GTX 295 then cripple it. This doesn't matter.

I just want to know can it be done, and if so, how?

use evga precision/gpuz and monitor your card. you'll see that when it's not under stress/load it cuts everything down for you.

I don't think that disabling 1 core will cut power consumption in half. (Edit - at a given rez and fps) One core will have to do the work of 2. Here's an interesting chart - http://www.tomshardware.com/reviews/...5,2266-14.html

Btw, I don't know if or how you can disable one core.

Yes and no.

While you can't fully disable an entire GPU on the GTX295, you can force it to run at very low power.

Disabling SLi or setting a particular game to Alternate Frame Render 1 will lower the usage of GPU1 significantly. I don't have access to the NV Archives anymore, so I can't lookup a specific query like the one you are asking in the knowledge base anymore. Sorry.

Haha that's because its not my card. I am able to use it for free for a month, and I decided to due to shortage of ATI 5 series and to wait tilll the release of Fermi.

It would be the card for me if my power supply was a bit more powerful (the rest of my system and the games I play are both deserving of a high performance card). BTW power supply is a Corsair HX520 - i.e. high quality but a not quite enough watts.

I disabled SLi and have been playing games without any sign of power-shortage problems. Thanks for the advice.
